Jackson is one of 10 national sites chosen for new fitness court

The City of Jackson park will be home to a new Limited Edition Signature Series Keith Haring Fitness Court.”This is an example of Jackson’s rising reputation as a radical city doing incredible things,” Jackson City Mayor Chokwe Lumumba said.The city was one of only 10 nationally-chosen location sites for the project. The eye-popping colorful fitness court is to promote wellness, movement, and engagement within the community.”Fitness is a primary pillar of health, and anything we can do to make it more fun, beautiful, and accessible to everyone is a win for this community,” Executive Director of the Greater Jackson Arts Council Silbrina Wright said.On Tuesday The Jackson City Council adopted the partnership with the National Fitness Campaign. The project raised a lot of eyebrows around the city with even the Director of Parks and Recreation calling it a “gold opportunity” for the city.”We have a golden opportunity to transform one of Jackson’s most conveniently located and highly visible public parks into an iconic destination point. Start working out, everybody. I see a city-wide pull-up competition in our future,” said City of Jackson’s Director of Park and Recreation Ison Harris.According to the Greater Jackson Arts Council, Keith Haring (1958-1990) is a name synonymous with public art and charitable good works.”If the name Keith Haring does not immediately click seeing his artwork will resonate. His designs are ubiquitous internationally. This court will be part art gallery, part outdoor gym, and complete point of pride for Jackson,” said Great Jackson Arts Council consultant Janet Scott.The project is expected to be constructed and operational by the end of the calendar year.
